On Wednesday 27th January Welbeck College hosted the second leg of the Leicestershire U18 State Schools Rugby Festival. This year in order to sustain the momentum and enthusiasm generated by the Rugby World Cup the RFU are organising mini tournaments to encourage local schools to play and compete in 10, 12 or 15 a side games. A Welbeck development squad attended the first festival in Melton Mowbray back in December and given the College's excellent facilities Director of Rugby Paul Calland was more than happy to accept an invitation to host a second tournament. "Our pitches are the envy of many schools and clubs in the region and given that we have many boys that are relatively new to the game it made perfect sense to get involved" Brooksby and South Leicester Colleges fielded strong teams and this provided the Welbeck 3rd XV with some tough opposition but very valuable game time. No trophies are awarded at the festival, the emphasis is on participation and enjoyment. The most important aspect of the initiative is that it gives boys with limited experience a chance to play in an organised and competitive environment against schools they would not normally have the opportunity to play.
Meanwhile on Wednesday 3rd February Welbeck College 1st XV secured a memorable win away at Loughborough Grammar School. The final score was 14 points to nil with superb tries coming from captain Matt Holland and winger Lewis Ackroyd. The 1st XV now eagerly await their County Cup Semi Final v Leicester Grammar at home on Tuesday 9th Feb kick off 1530.
